Buying farm-fresh produce and goods will be easy for the next six months, as shoppers can enjoy the bounty of Midwest farmers at four different Evanston markets!

The Downtown Evanston Farmers’ Market will open for its 37th season on Saturday, May 5, 2012. It will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through November 3, 2012. This crowd-pleaser has expanded to over 50 vendors, so you can purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, milk, eggs, flavored oils, pasta and bakery items, as well as flowers and plants.

The Downtown Evanston Market is located at the intersection of University Place and Oak Avenue, behind the Hilton Garden Inn. Free parking is available in the adjacent 1800 Maple Avenue Self Park. Special events are featured throughout the season and unique artwork by “Home Grown Artists” will be showcased and sold from June through October. Reusable and biodegradable bags are sold on site and Illinois Link cards are accepted.

Three other Farmers’ Markets will begin later this spring. Ridgeville Farmers’ Market will be held from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays from May 30 through October 10 (no market July 4). It features fresh local and organic produce, artisan breads, cage-free eggs, fair-trade coffee and great cookies. It is located on Ridge Ave. at South Blvd.

Evanston’s newest market, the Central Street Green Market, features all-organic produce from Lake Breeze Organics and other market goods. It will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 6 through October 31 (no market July 4). The Green Market is located in Independence Park, Central St. at Stewart St. (west of Green Bay Road).

The West End Ethnic Market returns to the ETHS lot at the intersection of Dodge Ave. and Church St. at a new time. The market will be held  from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays from June 30 through October 13. Illinois Link cards also are accepted at the West End Market.
