Water Main Replacement Work at 1700 Block of Lyons St. until May 25

Posted on Monday Apr 30, 2012

The City of Evanston Utilities Department will be replacing the water main on Lyons Street. This improvement is being completed to improve the reliability of the water distribution system in your area. This project will be funded by the existing City water operating budget at no direct charge to the property owners. Work is expected to last until May 25, 2012, weather permitting.

Initially, the road will be excavated and a new 6" water main pipe will be installed. The new pipe will be disinfected and tested to ensure that it is safe to put into service. Individual water services will then be transferred from the old water main to the new water main. Some sewer repair may also occur as part of this project.

Following this, the excavation will be backfilled, and concrete will be poured in the trench. The new concrete will be barricaded to protect it during the curing process.
After curing is complete, the trench will be restored with asphalt. Disruptions to water service may occur when the new pipe is connected to the distribution system and when water service is transferred to the new water main. Residents will be notified in advance before any water service interruptions occur.

During this process, residents may experience parking restrictions, temporary road closures, and service interruptions. The Utility Department staff will do it's best to minimize the impact on area residents, while maintaining a safe and secure worksite.

Work will be completed by city staff. If residents have any questions or comments, please contact Tim Bartus, Distribution Supervisor, at 847/448-8220.
