Evanston Police Announce Traffic Enforcement Initiative
The Evanston Police Department has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to conduct a series of traffic enforcement campaigns for fiscal year 2012. These enforcement campaigns are sponsored by grant money from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The purpose of these enforcement initiatives is to reduce motor vehicle crashes resulting in injuries through increased visibility of police during these campaigns.
The enforcement campaigns will emphasize the use of occupant restraints, including safety belts, child safety seats, and booster seats. Special attention will also be focused on speed law violations and impaired driving.
The Memorial Day campaign will run from May 11th through May 28th of 2012. Non-compliant drivers will be issued citations as visible enforcement programs offer the greatest potential for changing the public's non-compliance regarding seatbelt usage and child safety seats.
Since the enactment of the primary enforcement law in 2004 for seatbelts, IDOT reports that 90% of drivers are now wearing seatbelts in Illinois.
