Crossing Guard Changes for Haven, Kingsley and St. Athanasius Schools Starting Jan. 7
Since the school year began, there have been some safety concerns raised by area parents and businesses regarding an increased number of students crossing the street at Central St. and Broadway Ave. from Haven Middle School, Kingsley Elementary School and St. Athanasius School. As a result, a study was conducted by the City of Evanston's Public Works Department over several days to observe crossing patterns at the current designated school crossing, located at Central St. and Green Bay Rd., and the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing, located at Central St. and Broadway Ave.
Findings showed that the number of school-aged children crossing at the intersection of Central St. and Broadway Ave. exceeded the standard set by the city. It was also found that the number of students crossing at the current designated school crossing, located at Central St. and Green Bay Rd., decreased below this set standard.
To rectify this issue, the Public Works Department is implementing a change in location of the crossing guard. The crossing guard currently located at Central St. and Green Bay Rd. will be relocated to Central St. and Broadway Ave.
However, in order to ensure children and parents are acclimated to this change, a transition period will occur between Monday, January 7 through Friday, January 11, in which both intersections will have a crossing guard. Beginning Monday, January 14, the change will formally take effect, and a crossing guard will only be located at Central St. and Broadway Ave.
Please ensure your children are aware of this change. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department by calling 3-1-1.
