Ward Eight Bar is an upper-scale cocktail lounge and small-plates restaurant. The owners are formally of In Fine Spirits in Andersonville. The establishment specializes in classic cocktails; the bar is even named after the classic cocktail, Ward Eight.  This cocktail claims its origins in Boston in the late 1800s.

In 2011, the City of Evanston purchased this property, along with the properties located at 623-627 and 727-729 Howard St. The purchases were made with Tax Increment Finance (TIF) District funds as part of the city’s efforts to revitalize the area and underutilized commercial properties within the Howard/Ridge TIF District and to create a destination location for residents and visitors.

In March 2012, City Council authorized the City Manager to execute a lease to own agreement with Carlson and Modeer for the property. Construction started in Summer/Fall 2012, which included major rehabilitation of the first floor to transform two commercial spaces into one single bar space.  The fixtures throughout the bar were reclaimed from church pews and other uses. The owners of the establishment rent from the city one of the two affordable apartments above the business.

The bar had a soft opening on Friday, November 30 and will officially open its doors on Wednesday, December 12, 2012.
