Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month as "Jalisco Week" Comes to Evanston August 29

Posted on Tuesday Aug 13, 2013

The City of Evanston and the Federation of Hometown Associations from the State of Jalisco, Mexico (known as "Fedejal"), will celebrate the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month with a free event in Evanston. As one of the Illinois stops for “Jalisco Week,” the Evanston event will feature the Mariachi group Mexico Vive; folkloric and contemporary dance troupes; artisans straight from Jalisco; and much more. This event is free and open to the public.

The "Jalisco en Evanston" event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 29 at the Levy Center, located at 300 Dodge Ave. in Evanston. This is the second year that the City of Evanston will host this event (see video and photos from last year's event below).

The Evanston event is part of a week-long tour of the area. Each year, during the months of August and September, Fedejal celebrates “Semana Jalisco” (Jalisco Week), where they tour several cities in Illinois to celebrate their culture and traditions as a prelude to Hispanic Heritage Month. The other stops on the "Jalisco Week" itinerary include Joliet, Round Lake Beach, Cicero, Aurora, Chicago and Mel-rose Park.

"We appreciate the support of the City of Evanston and of course we are grateful to Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl for opening the doors of Evanston to Fedejal. This will be a great opportunity for Evanston residents to live, share and celebrate the cultural traditions of Jalisco and Mexico.”

Fedejal builds bridges between the U.S. and the Mexican State of Jalisco. Fedejal aspires to a global society that embraces diversity of cultures and shares a commitment to ensure that all people who want to work, contribute to their communities and seek a better life for themselves and their families have the opportunity to do so in an environment of dignity and respect.
