City of Evanston to Host 5th Annual Recycling Fair July 11

Posted on Tuesday Jun 16, 2015 in Events, Public Works, Recycling, Sustainability

The City of Evanston will host its fifth annual recycling fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 11 at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave. The free event provides residents an opportunity to recycle a variety of items, securely shred documents, obtain recycling education materials, learn about construction projects, visit with “green” vendors, and more.

New this year, the fair will feature an enhanced “Touch a Truck” display, allowing community members of all ages to get an up-close look at City vehicles and heavy equipment, as well as those from ComEd, Nicor Gas, the US Army and more. Children can also enjoy free face-painting, temporary truck tattoos, and complimentary popcorn and snow cones.

To support community members and businesses in transitioning away from disposable plastic shopping bags, this year the City will collect reusable bags at the recycling fair for distribution at Evanston community centers and library locations. Reusable bags of any kind can be donated; bags should be in usable condition. To learn more about Evanston’s Shopping Bag Ordinance, which takes effect on August 1, 2015, visit cityofevanston.org/bags.

Also new to the fair this year, Random Acts of Flowers, a non-profit organization with a branch location in Evanston, will be collecting vases to use for flower deliveries to community members in nearby health care facilities.

For the fifth year, the City will give away compost bins to Evanston residents who attend the fair. Staff will only accept orders for the compost bins at the fair and will deliver them at a later date along with an instructional flyer. The bins are for composting purposes only and will not have wheels.

Residents who bring items to recycle or shred are asked to follow the signs and remain in their cars as City staff unload the items. Electronic recycling and document destruction are open to residents of all Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) communities. Participants are asked to NOT line up before 8 a.m.
