Alley Lighting

The City Council has approved a program to provide financial assistance to residents who install new alley lights. This program will reimburse those Evanston residents who live in approved CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) target areas and have installed a new alley light after March 1, 1994. Under this program, the City will pay half of the annual cost of the new alley light for the first five years. The current average cost of an alley light is about $6.30 per month or $75.60 per year. Residents in this program will receive about $37.80 per year. After five years, the resident is responsible for paying the full cost of service.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please follow these steps:

  1. Check the map to determine if you live in CDBG target area.
  2. Call Commonwealth Edison at 1-866-639-3532 to order the alley light.
  3. After the light has been installed, send a copy of the installation receipt to the Evanston Division of Transportation to receive your reimbursement for the first year. Your reimbursement check will be mailed to you in about a month.
  4. To receive reimbursement for the second through the fifth years of the program, send a copy of your ComEd bill with the monthly lighting charges shown.

Residents who do not live in approved CDBG target areas and would like to have an alley light installed should follow the same procedure. They should still call Commonwealth Edison for installation, they just will not be subsidized.

Please call the Evanston Division of Transportation (311 or (847) 448-4311) if you have any questions concerning this program.
