Handyman Program

The Evanston Handyman Program provides minor repair and maintenance services in the homes or apartments of older adults who live in Evanston and are income eligible.

The service is free of charge to qualifying older adults (ages 65 and older) who are income eligible. There may be a minimal charge for the cost of materials. Services include the following activities:

  • Install safety strips on stairs and in bathtubs
  • Tack down area rugs
  • Put up and clean storm windows
  • Hang drapes
  • Hang pictures
  • Install bathroom grab bars
  • Install smoke detectors or change batteries in same
  • Winterize windows (putting in storm windows or weather stripping)
  • Change furnace filters
  • Fix sticky windows/doors
  • Replace light bulbs
  • Replace a broken window
  • Tighten a shaky banister
  • Replace cabinet hinges/handles
  • Change fuses
  • Repair minor holes/cracks in walls
  • Change washers in faucets
  • Clear clogged drains
  • Repair screens on doors and windows
  • Make minor fence repairs
  • Repair damaged electrical cords/plug ends
  • Install handrails inside or on the exterior of the home
  • Update faucets
  • Clean gutters of debris

This program is a partnership between the City of Evanston and CEDA Neighbors at Work.
