The Utilities Department is comprised of water & sewer operations as well as overseeing other utilities provided to the City of Evanston residents.

The Water Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant and the water mains, valves and fire hydrants in the Evanston distribution system.
The Evanston Water Treatment Plant is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, one of the world's most valuable sources of fresh surface water. The treatment facility has the capacity to supply up to 108 million gallons per day (MGD) of pure drinking water. Our facility is municipally owned and operated and in addition to serving the residents of Evanston (population 74,239) we also supply water to the Village of Skokie and the Northwest Water Commission which is comprised of the communities of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Palatine and Wheeling. The total population we serve is over 350,000!
The water distribution system is comprised of 157 miles of water main ranging in size from 3-inch diameter to 48-inch diameter. There are more than 2,000 valves and 1,400 fire hydrants in the Evanston distribution system.

The Sewer Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the sewer conveyance systems in Evanston. The city does not have a seweage treatment plant. Instead all of the sewage flows to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD). The sewage is treated at the MWRD North Side Treatment Plant located at the intersection of Howard Street and McCormick Boulevard.
The sewer employees perform preventative and routine maintenance of the three different sewer systems: a combined sewer system, a relief combined sewer system and a storm sewer system. These systems are comprised of over 200 miles of sewer mains ranging in size from 6-inch diameter to 120-inch diameter and include over 5,500 manhole inspection structures and over 9,000 drainage structures.
