Distribution
The water distribution system consists of 156 miles of water main, 1,236 fire hydrants, 1,832 distribution system valves as well as over 14,000 service connections. Division personnel are responsible for repairs to water mains, valves, hydrants and the City's portion of the service line. The City's portion of the customer service line is from the water main to the shut-off valve which is usually located in the parkway. Property owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the customer service line from the shut-off valve in the parkway into the property. Distribution personnel also make additions to the distribution system such as short sections of water main, valves, hydrants and new service taps.
In addition to the maintenance and repair of this system, division personnel maintain and repair water meters, replace water pipes when damaged, provide locations and measurements for other utilities and contractors as well as perform snow removal.

The above photos depict the Distribution Crew at work making a repair to a 24 inch water main. As is shown above, the amount of utility conduits in the street (phone, gas, electric, street lights, etc.) can make access for repairs a daunting problem.
