Meter

The Evanston Meter Division coordinates personnel to remove, test, repair and install new water meters, check for leaks, perform pressure analysis and provide emergency water connection on occasions of service line failures. Shop personnel answer a wide range of billing inquiries and special inspections are made for high water consumption. The Division establishes accounts for new customers; reviews water usage for billing; shuts off delinquent accounts; locates boxes and shuts off water for plumbing repairs; and inspects water cooled air conditioners and fire lines to large buildings which are billed separately.

Evanston's State Of The Art Meter Reading System

The City of Evanston has approximately 14,400 metered water accounts. The bulk of these water meters are connected to a radio transmission device (MTU) which transmits a meter reading twice per day. These reads are collected by data collector's which are located on city buildings and send the readings nightly via cell phone to the Evanston Water Department. Meter readings are then loaded into the billing system bi-monthly for billing and processing. If you should receive a water bill that reflects an estimated meter reading, please contact the Water Department as soon as possible either by e-mail to water@cityofevanston.org or phone the Meter Division at 847.866.2943. We will want to schedule an appointment to repair or install the radio transmission device as soon as possible. Estimated reads are very rarely accurate and can result in extremely high water/sewer bills when an actual reading is obtained.
