2018 Vehicle Registration Now Available

Post Date:10/25/2017 3:19 PM

Parking_600pxBeginning Wednesday, November 1, residents may begin to pay for their City of Evanston wheel tax, residential parking permits, and residential parking passes for 2018. The deadline to pay the wheel tax is Sunday, December 31, 2017.

On Friday, October 27, preprinted renewal notices will be mailed to residents with an online renewal ID and instructions. With this renewal ID, residents can pay for wheel tax, residential parking permits and residential parking passes online at cityofevanston.org/wheeltax.

All vehicles registered through the Illinois Secretary of State to an Evanston address are required to pay an annual wheel tax. Compliance is checked by License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, which stores the license plates of all vehicles registered to an Evanston address, as the City no longer issues physical vehicle wheel tax stickers. Failure to pay the wheel tax may subject drivers to parking tickets.

Residents are strongly encouraged to submit the wheel tax payment early, either online or by mail. There is no additional fee to pay online; instructions are available regarding required documentation for verification and processing.

Residents can pay the wheel tax and purchase residential parking permits and passes in person at:

  • City Collector's Office, Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. The Collector's Office will be open for extended hours Monday through Thursday, November 1 through December 28, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and regular hours on Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wheel tax payments only can also be made in person at:

  • Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Evanston-based Currency Exchanges

As a reminder, City offices will be closed on Friday, November 10 for a furlough day.

Those who wish to pay in person but do not receive a preprinted notice may still apply online or can pick up an application at the Levy Center or the Morton Civic Center beginning November 1.

The cost for a regular passenger car vehicle sticker is $75. A penalty may be added to all applications received or postmarked after December 31.
