50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program
Evanston property owners can improve the safety and appearance of their neighborhood by participating in the City’s 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program.
Spring is approaching and the City is in the process of preparing the 2018 program. Interested private property owners, both business and residential, should visit cityofevanston.org/sidewalk or call/text 847-448-4311 to participate. For convenience, residents may simply dial 3-1-1 in Evanston. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
While streets are maintained by the City, repair and replacement of damaged sidewalk slabs are the responsibility of the homeowner or business whose property is adjacent to the sidewalk. Through the 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program, the City pays half the cost of replacing the eligible sidewalk and the property owner pays the remaining half. In 2017, a typical 26.5-square-foot sidewalk slab cost $192.13 to replace, of which half, or $96.06, was invoiced to the property owner. 2018 prices will be finalized once a project list is established, bid, and a contractor is selected.
All public sidewalks in the city, including those in front of homes, businesses, faith organizations and schools, are eligible for the program.
