Traffic Signal Changes Planned for Ridge and Lake
To address reoccurring vehicle crashes and safety concerns, traffic signal operation changes at the Ridge Avenue and Lake Street intersection are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 4.
Left turn arrows will be added on northbound and southbound Ridge Avenue. The intersection will operate similar to the Ridge Avenue/Main Street and the Ridge Avenue/Oakton Street intersections, where northbound and southbound traffic will be allowed to flow in one direction at a time, while the other direction has to stop. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Lake Street will continue to flow in both directions during its signal interval. This change is being implemented on a trial basis and conditions will be reevaluated in 2019 before the change is made permanent.
Recently, the speed limit on Ridge Avenue, from Howard to Emerson Streets, was reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph. The Evanston Police Department is continuing its efforts to encourage behavior changes with targeted enforcement. These efforts focus on speeding, disobeying traffic regulations, distracted driving, and seat belt requirements.
Other measures, such as tree trimming to improve traffic signal visibility, have already been completed and will be reevaluated later this spring to determine if further trimming is needed to maintain a good line of sight.
