Post Date:09/11/2018 2:18 PM

WithRefugees_webEvanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty today announced his support for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) "Cities #WithRefugees" campaign, joining more than 60 mayors across the globe in standing up for those fleeing violence, persecution and natural disasters in their home countries.

The UNHCR’s global initiative invites cities and local authorities all over the world who are working to promote inclusion, support refugees and bring communities together to sign a statement of solidarity #WithRefugees. Evanston joins 17 other municipalities in the U.S. that have signed the statement, including Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. A complete list is available at unhcr.org/withrefugees/cities.

"I'm proud to stand with local leaders around the globe in supporting, welcoming and providing hope to refugees," said Mayor Hagerty. "Working together, cities like Evanston, Chicago and Ann Arbor can make a world of difference for those seeking a safe place to call home."

According to the UNHCR, more than 25 million people worldwide are living outside of their countries to escape violence and persecution, with two out of three settling in an urban area. Evanston has welcomed refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
