Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program Available

The City of Evanston Property Tax Assessment Review Office is reaching out to senior homeowners struggling to pay their Cook County property taxes to let them know about a tax-relief program. If your annual household income is $55,000 or less and you are 65 years old by June 1 of the year in which the application is made, you are eligible to apply to the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program for loans to cover property tax payments. The State of Illinois issues the loans, which do not have to be repaid until the property is sold or the homeowner dies. An interest rate of six percent per year is charged by the state. The maximum loan is $5,000 per year.

To apply:

  • Download the application from cookcountytreasurer.com or pick one up at the Property Tax Assessment Reviewer’s office, Morton Civic Center, Room G551, 2100 Ridge Ave., Evanston.
  • Submit the completed application and copies of the required documents to the Treasurer’s Office.
  • The deadline is March 1, 2019. Applications after that date cannot be accepted.
  • Homeowners must reapply every year.

For more information, please call/text 847-448-4311. For convenience, you may dial 3-1-1 directly while in Evanston.
