Post Date:08/23/2019 10:27 AM

16-228-178Evanston community members can walk, bike, play and enjoy a car-free mile of Main Street during Streets Alive!, the City's annual "open streets" festival.

The free event, which features the Evanston Green Living Festival, will take place on Main Street in Evanston from Chicago Avenue to Robert Crown Park (at Florence Avenue) on Sunday, September 8, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.

Free, fun activities for all ages will be featured, including live music, kids' crafts, games, chalk art and painting, a bicycle safety course, sports demonstrations and activities, delicious food and refreshments from street vendors, and more.

The event's one-mile route runs through four of the City’s nine aldermanic wards (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 9th) and spans two parks, a lively business district and a major transit hub.

The popular Evanston Green Living Festival will again be located on Main Street between Ridge and Asbury Avenues. This annual environmental fest features organizations presenting products, services, and ideas that encourage and empower attendees to lead more sustainable lives.

Streets Alive! is part of the national “livability cities” movement. In that vision, streets aren't just for traveling—but for lingering, shopping, meeting friends or strolling. In keeping with that focus, visitors are encouraged to walk, bike, scooter, skate or take public transportation to Main Street. The CTA’s Purple Line and Metra both have stops on Main Street at Chicago Avenue. A Divvy Bikes station is located nearby at Chicago Avenue and Washington Street.

Streets Alive! is organized by the Evanston Environmental Association, Citizens' Greener Evanston, and the City of Evanston. North Shore University Health System is the Presenting Sponsor, and ComEd and the Evanston Bicycle Club are Platinum Sponsors. Other major sponsors include the Evanston RoundTable, Collective Resource, Mighty House Radio Show, Natural Awakenings Chicago, and The Mike Nowak Show.
