City to Commemorate Earth Day with a Virtual "Earth Week" Celebration

Copy of Copy of Copy of Evanston Earth Week 2 (1)The City of Evanston will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 2020) with a weeklong virtual celebration, April 19 through 26. "Earth Week" will include daily environmental-themed events and activities.

Each year, Earth Day brings together millions of people throughout the world to celebrate environmental progress, educate each other about stewardship and justice, and advocate for sustainable policies and practices. By participating in Earth Day locally, you help support implementation of Evanston's Climate Action and Resilience Plan. 

Hosted by the City's Office of Sustainability and the Evanston Ecology Center, these virtual Earth Week events and activities will be available to the public beginning April 19:

  • Eco Life Hacks Video, "Tips for Sustainable Living"
  • "Evanston Recycling or Wish-Cycling?" Quiz

  • Sustainable Bingo cards
  • Virtual Earth Day Dialogue hosted by Mayor Hagerty and a group of panelists on Friday, April 24 at noon. Register

The City is also hosting an Earth Week Challenge. Each day of the week, residents are encouraged to complete the following daily challenges and share them on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using the hashtags #EvanstonEarthWeek and #EarthDay50:

  • April 20 - Subscribe to an environmental podcast or newsletter
  • April 21 - Write a nature haiku
  • April 22 - Urge your elected officials to prioritize climate action in COVID-19 stimulus and recovery efforts
  • April 23 - Share your favorite existing Evanston nature photo
  • April 24 - Unsubscribe from paper junk mail at

Additional Earth Day events and activities including, creative environmental videos, will be hosted by Citizens' Greener Evanston along with other community partners. Content will be posted daily on the Citizens' Greener Evanston Facebook page.

This year’s Earth Week celebration is made possible through partnerships with Citizens' Greener Evanston, Evanston Made, Openlands Treekeepers- Evanston Chapter, E-town Sunrise, Quest 4 Earth, and D65 Green teams.
