Evanston Beaches Closed to Swimming Until Further Notice
Although Evanston and Illinois are making progress towards controlling the spread of COVID-19 and are on track to move to “Phase 3 – Recovery” of the Governor's Restore Illinois plan, the City’s beaches remain closed to swimming at this time.
Evanston beach guidelines and “no swimming” signs are posted at each beach. Beaches are tentatively scheduled to reopen to swimming in July. Beach tokens will not be available for purchase until opening plans are finalized.
Guidelines for Sand Use
The State and City remain under Governor Pritzker’s Stay at Home Order until Friday, May 29. Under this Order, no gatherings should occur with those outside of your household.
Once the City is instructed to move to Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan, gatherings of up to 10 people will be permitted. At that time, it is critical that community members utilizing the sand at Evanston beaches continue to practice strict physical distancing of at least six feet from others, wear a cloth face covering when a six-foot distance from others is difficult to maintain, and remain out of the water.
Until summer beach staffing is in place, the Evanston Police Department will be patrolling beaches to ensure safety precautions are being followed.
Beach updates are determined by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department in coordination with guidance from the City’s Health and Human Services Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health, and are subject to change based on current guidelines and recommendations. More information will be announced in the coming weeks.
Lakefront Restroom Facilities
All lakefront restroom facilities will reopen starting Monday, June 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Restrooms will be cleaned at a minimum every 2 hours per the Health Department guidelines.
