New Planning Initiative: Envision Evanston 2045

Post Date:01/25/2024 12:48 PM

Copy of Copy of Compensation Committee Flier (1)The City of Evanston today announced the launch of a planning initiative titled Envision Evanston 2045, a new comprehensive plan and zoning code that aims to reflect the shared vision for the future of the Evanston community. The City’s current comprehensive plan was approved in 2000, nearly a quarter of a century ago, and the current zoning code was approved in 1993.

Envision Evanston 2045 will include a vision statement, goals, and strategies, as well as a new zoning code that implements the community vision developed during the planning process. The City will use these elements to guide future policies and investments that address various topics including land use, transportation, affordable housing, sustainability, racial justice, economic development, fiscal responsibility, and public health.

“Envision Evanston is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of our community,” said Mayor Daniel Biss. “These efforts will have a huge impact on our community’s progress toward affordability, sustainability, and equity. This process is a chance for everyone to help craft the blueprint for the Evanston of tomorrow.”

To kick off Envision Evanston 2045, the City is hosting a hybrid launch event on Tuesday, February 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Parasol Room of the Morton Civic Center and via Zoom. During the event, community members will have the opportunity to hear from community leaders, learn about the new comprehensive plan and zoning code, and understand the plan’s impact on various sectors of the community. Most importantly, community members are invited to share their vision for Evanston in 2045. The event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend and participate. A Spanish interpreter will be available at the event.

Over the next year, community members can expect to see a broad range of opportunities to engage in the process, including online and in-person events aimed at meeting people where they are. The City will also host office hours where community members can learn about the project, share feedback, and ask questions.
