City Encourages Lights Out for Migratory Birds

Post Date:05/06/2024 3:49 PM
Over the next few days, May 6 - 8, an estimated 400 million birds per night are expected to migrate over the Midwest region. These birds face a significant risk of colliding with structures, particularly those that are illuminated at night. To minimize this risk, community members are encouraged to turn off all non-essential lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. This includes lights on buildings, towers, and other structures.

Every year, millions of birds die as a result of colliding with buildings. According to estimates, the number ranges from 365 to 988 million. Birds possess an incredible sensory system that enables them to navigate and orient themselves in darkness. However, light pollution from buildings and other sources at night can interfere with their natural ability to do so. This disorients migrating birds and makes them more vulnerable to collisions.

Additional tips to prevent collisions

  • Turn off or dim any non-essential exterior building lighting
  • Close curtains or blinds to reduce the escape of interior lighting
  • Avoid illuminating lobbies, plants, or fountains that may attract birds

Last year, the Audubon Council of Illinois designated the City of Evanston an official Bird City Illinois for its efforts to keep birds safe during their travels.
