Building and Inspection Services

The City provides residential and commercial building permits.

Permits: COVID-19 Pandemic Response

Plan review and permit applications can continue to be submitted in digital format only at permitdesk@cityofevanston.org; however, with a few exceptions, new permits will not be issued until the Stay at Home Order is lifted. To request a future building inspection, community members may call or text 847-448-4311 to be placed on a list to be contacted when inspections resume. Some inspections deemed necessary may be performed during the Stay at Home Order via phone/video.

The Community Development Department will give consideration to building permit issuance and inspection requests for emergency work, projects with extenuating circumstances and exterior projects that can be performed safely by following recognized COVID-19 procedures. Residents and contractors who believe their projects meets this criteria should email emergencypermits@cityofevanston.org.
