Community Policing Unit
As a part of the Field Operations Division, the Community Policing Unit is comprised of Problem Solving Team Officers (PST), Foot Patrol Officers, and School Resource Officers (SROs). PST Officers serve as a community policing mechanism by making personal contacts with area residents and merchants, as well as providing a broad spectrum of proactive and preventive community services (attending neighborhood meetings, providing security assessments, safety presentations, etc.).
The Community Policing Unit is headed by a Commander along with a Sergeant who directly supervise the efforts of the Officers to maximize the effectiveness in dealing with quality of life issues, crime issues, and assisting the public with organizing community groups within the City of Evanston. Additionally, foot patrol officers assist with citywide concerns that may require a targeted approach. The Department's Community Engagement and Programs Coordinator also falls under the Community Policing Unit and is responsible for the facilitation of many of the department's community programs, such as Citizen Police Academy and Explorers.
The Community Policing Unit offers several services and programs.
