Traffic Bureau

As part of Patrol Operations, the Traffic Bureau enforces traffic laws and City ordinances to make Evanston safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Its primary goal is to reduce traffic crashes and promote public safety throughout the community.

Awards and Recognition

The Traffic Bureau enjoys strong support from the Chief of Police and has been recognized nationally and at the state level for its traffic safety and enforcement initiatives.

Bureau Overview

The Traffic Bureau is composed of six officers supervised by a sergeant. Officers conduct their duties using both covert police vehicles and marked police motorcycles, allowing them to monitor traffic effectively and respond quickly.

Specialized Training

Traffic Bureau officers undergo advanced training in several areas to enhance public safety:

  • Crash Reconstruction: Officers trained in crash reconstruction analyze evidence from major crashes to determine the impact and sequence of events. Training includes intensive study in physics, mathematics, and crash investigation at Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

  • Crash Data Retrieval: Officers are certified to retrieve and analyze data from vehicle event data recorders (EDRs) using the on-board diagnostic system. This information helps develop complete crash reconstructions.

  • Drug Recognition: Officers receive specialized training to identify drivers impaired by intoxicating substances other than alcohol.

  • Commercial Vehicle Safety: Officers are certified to enforce Federal Motor Carrier Regulations, including safety inspections and weight compliance for commercial vehicles.

The Traffic Bureau’s combination of expertise, specialized training, and community focus ensures that Evanston streets remain safe for all.
