Background
Evanston's Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department launched a new process to determine priorities and needs for its outdoor parks, beaches, and school playgrounds in the City of Evanston. All outdoor park facilities were assessed on measures including cleanliness, safety, physical structures, appearance, and functionality. Surveys were completed in October 2016 to understand how residents currently use parks and how satisfied they are with Evanston’s facilities.
Groups using the park facility will comply with laws of the State of Illinois, the City of Evanston, and any and all rules set forth by the Parks and Recreation Department.
- No gambling or alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises.
- No admission fees may be charged or concessions sold in any City of Evanston facility or park. Such action will result in immediate ejection from the premises and rentals will be immediately terminated.
- Bonfires are not permitted. Home grills may be used where public grills are installed. Extinguished coals must be placed in garbage receptacles.
- All paper, debris and garbage must be collected and deposited in trash containers.
- Tents larger than 10x10, amplified music, dance floors, DJ’s and inflatable play apparatuses are not allowed.
- Glitter, rice and birdseed are not allowed.
- Private individuals may not place portable toilets on City lands, parkways or streets.
- Motorized vehicles may not be driven into parks, onto beaches or picnic areas.
- Dogs are not allowed in any park, at any time, without a leash.
- Parks officially close at 11:00 p.m. and must be vacated at that time. (7-10-2 (B))
- No individual or group shall knowingly release, cause, or organize the release of balloons into the air in City owned parks and beaches, unless the balloons are intended for bona fide scientific or meteorological purposes as specifically approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation or his/her designee.
The Greenways Division managed by the Public Works Agency Department provides the horticultural maintenance of all public grounds within the City. Over 300 acres of land, encompassing 97 sites, are maintained by employees assigned to this business unit. These sites include 76 parks, 50 playgrounds, nine roadside plantings, the grounds of eight public buildings, and four civic beautification plantings.
The major components of horticulture maintenance are lawn care, small tree, shrub and ground cover care, perennial bed maintenance, weed control, and the pickup of more than 400 refuse containers from all park properties.
Employees assigned to this unit also assist in citywide snow removal and recreation facility maintenance when necessary. Additionally, employees maintain the equipment used for the upkeep of the grounds, and make repairs to all the different site furnishings such as playground equipment, picnic tables, park benches, and fencing. Employees also oversee landscape and irrigation system maintenance contracts.
If you see any issues that need to be addressed in the parks, please call 311 or submit a request for service.
