Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb certification within one year of March 28, 2020.  Evanston residents are eligible for a waiver of the CPAT fee if taken at NIPSTA.  Upcoming CPATs at NIPSTA are scheduled for February 8 and March 7, 2020.  If you are interested in taking one of the remaining CPATs, you will need to provide proof of residence and contact Mary Dankwa at or 847-448-8244. 
  • $25 application fee (waived for Evanston residents)
  • US Citizen or US Permanent Resident
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Between 21 and 34 years of age, if over 35 years of age, must have previous experience as firefighter/paramedic; if between the ages of 35 and 40, must have turned 35 while serving in the military
  • Willing to obtain paramedic license within 24 months of employment

Human Resources is the central coordinating point for the filling of all full-time, permanent part-time, temporary, and seasonal positions. Human Resources also provides assistance and guidance to the operating departments and employees in all areas of employment including:

  • salary administration

  • benefit administration
  • discipline
  • on-the-job injuries and disability
  • labor relations
  • safety

Chosen candidates will be required to provide proof of licenses, certifications, and education required for the position for which they are applying. Candidates will also be subject to qualifying pre-employment processes, including medical examination, drug/alcohol screen, employment verification, and criminal background check.

2019 Police Officer Eligibility List

Preliminary Eligibility List (expires 11/11/2021) - Interviews of persons on the Preliminary Eligibility List will take place, in rank order after preferences are applied, until the list expires or has been exhausted.  Candidates who are eligible to proceed through the hiring process after interviews will be placed on a Final Eligibility List.

2018 Firefighter/Paramedic Eligibility Lists

Final Eligibility List (expires 6/13/2020) - List of candidates by ranked combined score, after application of preference points.  Offers of employment will be made to persons on this Final Eligibility List, in rank order, until the list is exhausted or expires.

Initial Eligibility List (posted 5/21/2018) - List of candidates by ranked combined  score after written exam and oral interviews (preference points to be added).

Other required steps for Police Officers and Firefighters/Paramedics include an oral interview, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical screening, background investigation, and final certification by the Civil Service Commission.
