In order to streamline how senior social service programs are administered, the City of Evanston introduced the “Evanston Benefit Card” on March 1, 2011. This will make programs more accessible to seniors and allow cardholders to receive a discount at participating Evanston businesses.
Residents may qualify or re-qualify for certain benefits in the community, such as Subsidized Taxicab Program, Wheel Tax Discount (formerly Vehicle Sticker), Recreation Program Fee Assistance, Yard Waste Stickers & Cart Discount, and the Handyman Program.
The Computer Lab is open for Levy Center members when classes are not in session.
Exercise classes and Health & Wellness classes
Levy Center members pay a discounted fee for those classes which limit participation to those age 55 and older. Regular fees apply for classes geared to adults of all ages.
Levy Senior Center members pay discounted fees.
Lunch is available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost of lunch is $7.00 for people age 59 years and younger and a suggested donation of $5.00 for people age 60 years and older. Food and beverage vending machines also are on site.
The Tuesday shopping day travels to the Dodge and Dempster stores, which includes Valli Produce, Dollar Store, nearby restaurants. The Wednesday grocery shopping day travels to FOOD4Less (Main Street) and Jewel (Howard Street), which also is convenient to Target and Sam's Club. View the Shopping Schedule.
Income Tax Assistance
AARP provides free tax assistance from February until mid-April. Call Levy Center at 847-448-8250 to schedule your appointment.
Program fee assistance is available to qualified Evanston residents on a sliding scale according to the number of family members in relation to the total family income. Scholarships are not available for special events or trips. If you are interested in obtaining information about this process, please ask at the Levy Center office.
At least one trip per month is offered. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a discounted fee for Levy Center members.
Snow Shoveling Assistance
Are you looking for assistance with snow removal during the winter months? Or are you hoping to find a way to connect with your neighbors to offer your assistance shoveling? Older adults and those with disabilities who are seeking help and those who would like to volunteer are encouraged to sign up for the City of Evanston's Snow Shoveling program. This service connects residents who are unable to shovel their own walks with volunteers who are willing to provide snow shoveling services.
