As a part of the Field Operations Division, the Problem Solving Team's (PST) uniformed officers provide motorized patrol along with highly visible foot and bike patrol in neighborhoods. PST officers serve as a community policing mechanism by making personal contacts with area residents and merchants as well as providing a broad spectrum of proactive and preventive community services (attending neighborhood meetings/block club development, security surveys, etc.).
Recent additions to the Problem Solving Team, which comes under the Community Strategies Bureau of the Department, is headed by a police commander along with a police sergeant that directly supervise the efforts of the officers to maximize it's effectiveness in dealing with quality of life issues, crime issues and assisting the public with organizing community groups within the City of Evanston. Additionally, two foot patrol officers assigned to the 5th Ward of the city now work under the direction of the Community Strategies Bureau who were formally assigned to the patrol division.
