About Us

The Evanston Fire Department maintains a full-time professional staff of 118 members. The staff includes 115 sworn members and three civilian support personnel stationed at headquarters and five stations. The Department responds to over 12,000 calls a year, with an average response time of under four minutes. The Department achieved the highest possible rating, Class 1, for fire protection services from the Insurance Service Office, Inc (ISO), and is an accredited Emergency Management City.

Fire Administration

Fire Administration is made up of the leadership of the Evanston Fire Department, including the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, two Division Chiefs, and two civilian staff. Collectively, Fire Administration coordinates the overarching planning, budgeting, and logistics of the department.

Fire Prevention Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau's main objective is fire prevention and awareness through a proactive approach to safety. This is accomplished through: enforcement of fire and building Codes, investigating of fires for cause and origin, fire inspections, construction and certificate of occupancy inspections, plan review of all new construction, testing of all fire safety systems such as fire alarms, emergency lighting, sprinklers, etc., and public education and fire safety awareness programs.

Fire Suppression

The Fire Suppression Division is the largest division of the Fire Department, operating on a 24-hour on/48-hour off schedule across three shifts: Gold, Black, and Red. While on duty, personnel respond to a wide range of emergencies, including fires, medical calls, rescues, carbon monoxide investigations, and hazards like downed trees or power lines. The division also participates in ongoing training to maintain skills and serves on special operations teams, including Water Rescue, Dive Rescue, Technical Rescue, HazMat, Drone, and CPR.

Office of Emergency Management

The City of Evanston Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM) goal is to ensure the City’s readiness to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from the effects of major emergency/disaster that threaten lives, property, and the environment by: Conducting a comprehensive risk analysis of our community; Providing a comprehensive safety preparedness education programs for the citizens including our special needs population and long term care facilities; Training City staff in their roles and responsibilities regarding emergencies/disasters; and Ensuring collaboration and inter-agency coordination to assist in the City’s emergency management efforts.

Lifeguards

The Evanston Fire Department began lifeguard operations at the City's five beaches in 2023. The City hires approximately 140 lifeguards (including supervisors, managers, and coordinators) to serve and protect the lakefront. For information about the hiring process, please go to this link
