Appeal Your Property Tax Assessments and Apply for Tax-Saving Exemptions

Property owners may submit a property tax appeal online through Thursday, June 4, 2026. Filing an appeal online at the Cook County Assessor Appeals Portal is free, simple, and typically takes less than 20 minutes. 

The Assessor’s Office also offers a video tutorial to help guide residents through the appeal process.

Residents seeking assistance filing an appeal may submit an Appeal Authorization form by May 26, 2026, to have an appeal filed on their behalf before the June 4 deadline. It is not necessary to visit in person to file your appeal.

Property owners should note that Cook County property tax bills are issued one year in arrears. As a result, savings from successful 2026 appeals will not appear on tax bills until summer 2027.

Property Tax Exemption Deadline

In addition, residents are encouraged to apply for property tax exemptions by Friday, May 15, 2026. Claiming eligible exemptions can help reduce annual property tax bills, and many exemptions automatically renew each year once approved.

Available exemptions may include:

• Homeowner Exemption 
• Senior Exemption 
• "Senior Freeze" Exemption 
• Persons with Disabilities 
• Veterans with Disabilities 

Residents can review available exemptions and apply online through the Cook County Assessor Exemptions Page.

Property owners who have already applied for an exemption can check their application status by:

1. Visiting the Cook County Assessor Property Search and entering their PIN or address
2. Selecting “2025” in the tax year dropdown menu
3. Clicking the “Exemption Status” tab in the sidebar menu
