Animal Control
As part of the Field Operations Division of the Evanston Police Department, the Animal Warden responds to citizen requests and complaints involving both domestic and wild animals, including birds and reptiles. The Animal Warden also provides guidance on animal control concerns, issues citations for violations of animal control ordinances, and enforces applicable laws. Additional responsibilities include apprehending and impounding stray animals and managing the adoption of unwanted dogs and cats through the Evanston Animal Shelter.
Trapping wildlife in Evanston
In most cases, Evanston residents and local wildlife coexist without issue. Occasionally, however, wildlife can create challenges for residents. When this occurs, it is important to know that Illinois state law requires a permit for each animal that is trapped. Trapping wildlife without a permit, including using a privately owned trap, is illegal and violates state law.
