City of Evanston Storm Updates

Update as of 4:45 p.m. on July 27

Public Safety

  • Police and Fire Department personnel continue to respond to hundreds of calls about downed trees, etc.
  • Numerous streets remain closed due to downed trees.
  • Do not drive or walk through flooded streets.
  • Watch for displaced or open sewer covers.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately by calling 911 or ComEd: 1-800-EDISON-1

Transportation

  • UPDATE 8:30pm: Service on the Purple Line has resumed and trains are running normally following earlier debris on the track between Linden and Howard. 

City Services

Public Works (PWA)

  • Recycling collection has been paused for today. About 2.5 routes will be rescheduled for tomorrow morning.
  • Landfill/refuse (LRS) routes are still expected to be completed today.
  • Forestry crews, supplemented by staff from other divisions, will continue working today and resume tomorrow to clear downed trees
  • City priorities right now: clearing/opening roads and sidewalks, opening storm drains, and controlling intersections.

311

  • 311 will remain open until 8 p.m. tonight and reopen at 6 a.m. tomorrow.
  • Residents may experience intermittent phone/internet issues when calling 311.

Parks & Recreation Closures

  • Levy Senior Center is closed for the remainder of today due to a power outage.
  • Restrooms at Dempster and Lee Street beaches are closed due to power outages.
  • Aquatics camp is canceled tomorrow due to extensive lakefront damage.
  • Beaches will be closed to swimming tomorrow due to a Beach Hazard Alert
  • Fleetwood-Jourdain Center will be closed for the remainder of the week due to an HVAC issue. Camps have been rerouted to the Robert Crown Community Center.
  • Café au Lake will not be open tomorrow
  • Impacted programming will receive dedicated communication
  • Lakefront restrooms will be closed tomorrow.

Additional Information

  • ComEd is prioritizing storm-related calls only; non-storm-related service requests will not be addressed until further notice.
  • Community members are asked to delay non-storm-related 311 calls. Debris will continue to be removed throughout the week.
  • Cooling Centers are available due to heat warning:
    • Robert Crown Center (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
    • Prieto Community Center (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
    • Evanston Public Library (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
