Cooling Centers Open During Elevated Heat Indices
The National Weather Service has announced a warm, humid pattern settling into the region this week. Heat index values could exceed 100°F at times, especially Tuesday and Wednesday. Occasional showers and storms are also expected to move through the area.
Community members are urged to take preventive actions during this hot weather to avoid heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, and to check on people at risk, especially elderly individuals.
Cooling Centers
Community members are encouraged to take advantage of the public cooling centers listed below:
- Robert Crown Community Center - 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Levy Senior Center - 9 a.m to 9 p.m.
- Prieto Community Center - 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Evanston Public Library - 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tips to Prevent Heat-related Illnesses
The following actions are recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses:
- Drink lots of water, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and high salt intake
- Stay in cool, shaded areas while outdoors, and keep the blinds drawn or lights down indoors
- Use air conditioners or fans; avoid excessive exposure to heat in unventilated areas
- Reduce physical activity
- Take cool baths or showers, and use cool towels
- Wear loose, light cotton clothing and a breathable hat
- Eat light meals; avoid eating heavy meals and using the oven
- Do not leave people or pets alone in a hot car, even for a few minutes
