Please review the following safety tips for extremely cold weather:

Personal Safety

  • Wear several loose, lightweight layers, waterproof outer shells, a hat, scarf, and mittens (warmer than gloves).
  • Minimize time outside and take frequent breaks indoors.
  • Cover ears, face, hands, and feet, as frostbite can happen quickly.
  • Drink warm fluids (broth, tea) and eat energy-rich foods; avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Stretch and take breaks when shoveling snow to prevent overexertion.
  • Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

Home & Utilities

  • Have emergency kits, batteries, and flashlights ready
  • Insulate pipes, open cabinet doors to expose them to warm air, and disconnect hoses.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.
  • Use generators outdoors, away from windows.

Community & Pets

  • Check on elderly neighbors, people with disabilities, and those living alone.
  • Use 311 or local services for well-being checks if needed.
  • Keep pets indoors, provide warm shelter, and ensure food/water don't freeze.
