Evanston Police Launch Citywide Traffic Safety Enforcement Effort

As the year winds down and Evanston prepares to enter 2026, the Evanston Police Department (EPD) is launching a focused, elevated traffic enforcement campaign to improve roadway and pedestrian safety throughout the city.

The initiative comes in response to ongoing community feedback and safety concerns, including repeated reports of dangerous driving. Our residents have consistently raised issues involving speeding, failure to stop at stop signs, and distracted driving. These violations negatively affect the safety of other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The enforcement effort will prioritize violations that most directly impact public safety, including those near schools. Officers will also concentrate on areas where data shows frequent traffic offenses or collisions, as well as locations identified by community members.

The initiative will be elevated by deploying resources to traffic enforcement. The department will use intelligence-led policing to determine when and where enforcement is most needed. Deployment decisions will be guided by traffic-related incidents, officer observations, and community input. Residents can expect to see officers in and around schools during pickup and drop-off.

“This enhanced, ongoing effort reflects what we’re hearing from residents across Evanston in all wards and virtually all neighborhoods,” said City Manager Luke Stowe. “Even though it is an enforcement initiative, ultimately, our efforts will be about safety over citations. I appreciate Chief Stewart and our EPD team expanding our capabilities to address this critical community safety need.”
