Permits

A new fee schedule for inspections and testing of all fire systems was implemented on January 1, 2026. See pages 7-8 of the City's Fee Schedule for details. 

Permit/Plan Review Fees

Permit/Plan review fees are based on the type and, in most cases, the size of the project. The fee structure includes the first plan review, a re-review, permit, and system acceptance testing.

Permit Applications

A permit is required prior to the installation or modification of any fire sprinkler system, fire pump, standpipe system, fire alarm or detection system, or kitchen hood suppression system. A permit issued by the City of Evanston Building Department does not include the scope of these systems; a separate permit will be issued for each system. A Fire Alarm/Suppression Application must be completed and submitted, along with one (1) set of plans and one (1) set of documents. Backflow Preventer Permits

Any work that requires installing or modifying a backflow preventer will require a separate CCCD permit.  One (1) additional set of plans and documents shall be submitted along with a separate permit application.  A CCCD Permit Application should be filled out, which includes information on the plumbing contractor.  Any contractor performing work on the backflow preventer must hold a C3 Contractor License issued by the Utilities Department.

Local Amendments/Information

The City of Evanston has adopted both the 2003 International Fire Code and the 2003 NFPA 101-Life Safety Code. In addition to these codes, the City of Evanston has adopted certain requirements specific to Evanston. Bonfire Permits

A permit is required in order to have a bonfire at either the Cement Fire Ring at the Lakefront or Norris University Center at Northwestern University. Click on the following for bonfire permit rules and regulations and to apply for a permit: Bonfire Permits.
